To feed the soil, compost is required. Lots of compost! It is an interesting process, similar to the cooking process of a lasagna. To get a good fertile compost, wet layers must be alternated with dry layers, Brigitte tells us. We have visited three farmers so far, and have seen that each one has it's own tips and tricks according to making compost. For Brigitte, the base of her compost starts in a big wooden rectangle. The base and first layer are wood logs, which are already starting to decompose. They ensure good nutrition at the bottom. A dry layer, such as straw and dried ferns, is covered and alternated with a wet layer, such as donkey mash, freshly sliced grass and organic waste. Again and again! This compost will bring magic in the soil next spring!
